So how does it work?

I start with a list of ever-changing blogs and websites (ever-changing because as they get shut down or new ones are found the list gets adjusted) that are known pirate sites and serve everything I find. After I finish searching through those sites, I have a selection of search terms I used in conjunction with your author name that is most likely to pop up any additional pirates you have out there. Pirates are served through my own DMCA specific email address, and new clients will receive after their first sweep* a .zip containing a copy of all pirate letters I’ve sent, as well as a list of any links that were served directly on site or filed through Google.  

I can’t remove all pages / files from every site BUT: a lot of the sites where I can’t remove your pages don’t host their own files, and more often than not I can get those files removed from their hosts. In sites where I cannot remove the page and / or the files, I put in a Google forget request to prevent those pages from showing up in searches. I am also always looking into new ways of serving these sites, and if I can find the info I will serve anyone associated with said site: domain registrars, DNS provider, ISP, host company, etc.

I also recommend clients give me a heads up on upcoming releases (roughly within a week of) as getting new release pirates down as soon as they’re up decreases the spread. Clients are also encouraged to forward me any links they come across as things may pop up between sweeps.

One thing we know is true is people like things that are easy. By making your pirates harder to find, you decrease the likelihood of people looking for / choosing to share your books.

*Please note: Clients will only receive a .zip on their initial pirate sweep.

How long will it take to remove my pirates?

Unfortunately this one I don’t have an answer for, because it really comes down to how many books you have out there and how many sites they’re on. What I can tell you is that once you get the bulk of it dealt with, maintenance is next to no time.

Obviously, our goal (both of ours!) is to spend as little money as possible for the most result. What I offer new clients is a ‘trial run’. We set a time limit (ie: 2 hours), and I find / serve as many pirates as I can in those hours and can evaluate from there what your situation is looking like – if I think it’ll be just a couple more hours to get you in a good place, if I’ve barely made a dent, or if from here out it’s just regular sweeps to keep you good.

How much does this cost?

I bill by the hour as I think it’s important my clients only pay for the work they need! I invoice at the beginning of the month for the month prior* (ie: first week of Feb if I start in Jan). I record my actual time worked by 5-minute increments, and at the end of the month I add it all together and bill to the closest quarter hour. After that I send you an invoice. Depending on the severity of your pirates, I try to do sweeps 1-2 times a month, more if needed.

My hourly rate is $20 USD / $25 CAD (I’m in Canada). For Canadian authors I have an HST # I can provide.

* Due to maintenance sweeps generally being low monthly numbers, I do offer to invoice quarterly after your first initial month. In this case you’d receive invoices for the total time worked the first weeks of Jan, April, July, and October.
